Merivale Home
Location: Merivale | Christchurch
In honor of the client’s desire to rebuild following the devastation of the Canterbury Earthquakes, Merivale Home stands as a testament to resilience and thoughtful design. Nestled on the outskirts of the city, this expansive family residence embodies a refined fusion of architectural elements, weaving together sanded granite, plastered finishes, and horizontal weatherboard claddings.
Distinctive in its composition, the home boasts flat roof forms that elegantly diverge from the main structure, subtly delineated by slender horizontal windows. A harmonious interplay of materials characterises the residence, as expansive stone walls intersect with cedar weatherboard infills, creating a visual tapestry that speaks to the home’s architectural narrative.
Strategically positioned on the site to allow for future subdivision, the home cleverly integrates elements that envision potential layouts, offering the owner an opportunity to realise the inherent land value. Reflecting this foresight, the design embraces a private central courtyard and elevated sill heights oriented toward the eastern horizon within the medium density zoning.
The striking large roof form is accentuated by slender high-level glazing, delicately separating it from the primary structure.
In its entirety, the Merivale Home not only serves as a sanctuary for its inhabitants but also stands as a thoughtful embodiment of architectural innovation, paying homage to the past while embracing the promise of the future.
