Understanding Function vs Form in Architecture

You may have heard architects talk about ‘form and function’, but how do these concepts relate to home design and how do they fit with you and your project?

In the design world, ‘form’ means the shape or shell of a building while ‘function’ is more a kind of response to that building’s intended uses or purposes. It may seem logical to assume that architects will typically start with a project brief and from that sketch out a house plan – or form – with functionality added almost as an after-thought. In fact, this is not a recipe for good design.

In our practice, functionality considerations always come first. We start every new project by getting to know our clients so we understand how they live and what their interests and goals are. This is pivotal to then achieving a functional design that will support and enhance their way of life.

Placing ‘function’ at the start of the process invariably opens up opportunities to be playful with ‘form’, resulting in unified home design that will be inspiring to look at and that will function exceptionally well.
