Location: Castle Hill Village, Canterbury

Nestled among alpine homes in the small community of Castle Hill, this country holiday home has been designed for a young family. The compact dwelling balances comfort and practicality while embracing the surrounding alpine landscape and rural character.

  • The design centres on a simple, robust form suited to the alpine environment. A timber post-and-beam structure creates generous internal volume, while the first floor is carefully tucked within the main roof form to maintain a modest, cohesive exterior.

  • Large openings and carefully placed windows bring natural light deep into the home while framing views of the surrounding alpine landscape. The double-height living space enhances the sense of openness and allows daylight to move freely throughout the interior.

  • Designed as a year-round retreat, the home prioritises warmth and comfort. Generous insulation, efficient heating, and compact planning create cosy living spaces that provide shelter from the harsh alpine climate while remaining welcoming for family gatherings.

  • A combination of weatherboard and timber shingles reinforces the alpine character of the home. Natural materials and simple detailing complement the timber structure, creating a durable exterior that sits comfortably alongside neighbouring alpine dwellings.

  • The result is a warm, practical holiday home that responds to its alpine setting. Balancing simplicity, durability, and comfort, the design provides a relaxed retreat for family life while contributing respectfully to the character of Castle Hill.
