Ōrākei Residence | Contemporary Auckland Home
Project Overview
This family home in Ōrākei, Auckland, combines modern architecture with the surrounding natural landscape. Its sculptural concrete and timber form creates a strong architectural presence while maintaining warmth and connection to its coastal setting. With panoramic views toward Rangitoto Island, the home offers a tranquil and stylish environment tailored to modern family living.
Design Approach
The design balances solidity and softness through material contrast and form. Concrete provides permanence and structure, while vertical timber weatherboards add warmth and texture. A carefully planned layout maximises natural light, privacy, and connection to the outdoors, ensuring every space captures its unique outlook.
Light, Space & Connection
Large openings and considered window placement frame views of Rangitoto and the harbour beyond, drawing the landscape into the interior. Open-plan living areas flow seamlessly to outdoor spaces, creating a home that feels expansive yet grounded in its setting. The result is an environment filled with natural light, calm, and connection.
Materials & Detailing
A restrained palette of concrete, timber, and glass allows the natural textures to shine. Each element is crafted with precision, combining contemporary minimalism with enduring quality. The materials were chosen not only for beauty but also for performance and longevity in Auckland’s coastal conditions.
The Result
This Ōrākei home is a refined expression of modern architecture — sculptural yet inviting, grounded yet open to its surroundings. A thoughtful composition of form, material, and light creates a family home that celebrates both design and place.
