Merivale Renovation | Modern Christchurch Home
Project Overview
This renovation transformed a 1970s Merivale home into a contemporary, light-filled residence designed for modern living in Christchurch. The project focused on improving spatial flow, comfort, and performance while retaining the home’s essential character.
Design Approach
The design opens up key living areas to create stronger connections between kitchen, dining, and lounge spaces. Increased ceiling heights and generous proportions introduce a sense of openness and calm. A reconfigured roofline and newly proportioned square openings frame views, enhance natural ventilation, and connect the interior more intentionally with the outdoors.
Light, Warmth & Comfort
North-facing windows and skylights now flood the home with natural light, reducing energy use and creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. Upgraded insulation and double glazing dramatically improve thermal performance, ensuring comfort year-round — essential for Christchurch’s climate.
Materials & Detailing
Material selections focus on durability, texture, and warmth. Natural finishes and thoughtful detailing balance a modern aesthetic with a sense of timelessness. Passive design strategies and effective shading keep the home performing well across seasons.
The Result
This carefully considered renovation breathes new life into a classic Merivale home. The outcome is a refined, functional, and enduring space — where modern design and original character coexist beautifully.
